Innate immunity plays a role in detecting and combating pathogens through the activation of immune cells such as macrophages, dendritic cells, and natural killer (NK) cells. The adaptive immune system is regulated through the activation of B cells and T cells, which modulate the immune response by secreting immunoglobulins, chemokines, and cytokines. Cyclophosphamide, a chemotherapy drug used in the treatment of various diseases, is often employed to construct immunosuppressed mouse models due to its cytotoxic properties, which can lead to multiple side effects. Sargassum and Ulva, two marine algae, have been extensively studied for their polysaccharides, which exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, immunomodulatory, and anti-cancer effects. These two studies evaluated whether the polysaccharides isolated from Sargassum and Ulva could provide protective effects against cyclophosphamideinduced immunosuppression in mice. The results showed that preventive administration of crude Sargassum polysaccharides for 14 days alleviated the reduction in body weight and immune organ weight in mice and restored spleen cell and NK cell activity. Additionally, immune indices in the serum and spleen were improved. Similarly, preventive administration of Ulva polysaccharides for 28 days produced the same effects. These findings confirm that both crude Sargassum polysaccharides and Ulva polysaccharides exhibit immunomodulatory activity to varying degrees in cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed mice, improving immune response damage caused by cyclophosphamide.
