Velvet antlers has been recorded in traditional Chinese medicine classic written by Li Shi-Zhen about 500 years ago. Velvet antlers (termed “Nokyong” in Korean and “Lu rong” in China) has been used in the East for centuries as a key component for prevention and/or treatment of a wide range of health problems. Wax slices are higher quality, bone slices are low quality. Traditionally, the quality assessment of velvet antlers was mainly based on the experts’ senses. Traditional methods are prone to lack objectivity and accuracy, especially those in powder forms. Molecular identification, chromatography and spectrometry methods are time-consuming and pose a high cost. The electronic nose is suitable for discriminating different velvet antler slices to get optimized analytical method. That oral administration of VA powder is able to prevent and reduce the OVA-induced allergic symptoms in mice. The prevention by VA powder of allergen induced sensitization occurs via an elevation of Treg, Th1, and Th17 activity, via a suppression of Th2 cytokines in splenocytes and via an inhibition of specific IgE production in serum of mice. The alleviation of airway disease was found to be related to a suppression of Th2, proinflammatory, and Th17 cytokines in splenocytes and to an inhibition of specific IgE production in serum of mice. Proinflammatory cytokines are known important mediators in development of lethal sepsis. Our data indicated that the VA samples significantly inhibited the production of proinflammatory cytokines, which might effectively decrease the septic symptoms of mice. The VA powder, dehydrated by lyophilization, might preserve more bioactive components and show a better preventive effect against S. aureus than the other VA extract samples.
