Burdock (Arctium lappa) is a common vegetable in Japan, China, and Taiwan. It contains flavonoids, lignans, phenolic acids (caffeic acid, quinine acid, and chlorogenic acid [CGA]), and inulin. In addition to its use as a diuretic and for managing fever, it also has applications in folk medicine. Related pharmacological studies and clinical trials have indicated that the CGA in burdock root has hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects and exhibits free radical scavenging activity. CGA is the most abundant type of phenolic acid and is produced naturally by caffeic acid and quinine through esterification. Related research has indicated that CGA has various favorable biological properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticarcinogenic activity; moreover, quinine acid derivatives have a blood sugar-lowering effect. Burdock has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidation, anticancer, and hepatoprotective effects and can significantly reduce the weight of mice. It is more commonly used in detoxification and to treat Lee swelling and chronic dermatitis. The present study investigated the impact of obesity on the burdock extracts of animal experiments in rats fed a high-fat diet to evaluate the effect of burdock extract on blood parameters (glucose and lipid) in obese rats continually fed extracts of burdock in a low-fat diet. The results confirm that it is effective for controlling the weight of mice and lowering blood sugar and lipids. And for reproductive function have improved results.
