Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune disease, which involves chronic inflammation of different parts of the gastrointestinal tract resulting from an inappropriate mucosal immune response to intestinal microbes. IBD is widely accepted that genetic susceptibility and environmental factors induce impairment of mucosal barrier function and translocation of intestinal microbes. Infiltration of immune cells and increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines are the hallmarks during the development of IBD. Since EGCG has been ascribed anti-inflammatory properties in several other autoimmune diseases, the aim of the study was to explore whether EGCG protects against IBD through its
anti-inflammatory potential. Combining the above results, EGCG has the underlying mechanism of action to the suppress of inflammation in acute colitis, and finding through signal transduction pathway of 67-kDa laminin receptor.
