Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common type of joint disease, is prevalent in developed countries, especially among the elderly. It leads to consumption of functional foods becoming more popular. Extract of Psidium guajava leaf suppresses OA development in a rat ACLT model, and its ellagic acid (EA) detected in joint synovial membrane inhibits joint destruction from knee OA. To confirm EA having sure mechanism for anti-osteoarthritis. Researcher extracted EA from Kirganelia reticulata Baill and found that EA inhibit formaldehyde induced arthritis in rats showing decreasing paw edema volume and fewer movement time. In vitro and in silico expirements evidenced EA may have potential for anti-osteoarthritis, and EA possibly inhibit osteoarthritis through mediating HIF-2α inhibition by EA compound exhibited interactions with amino acids in the active pocket of HIF-2α.
