To investigate the effects of catalpol on the balance of Th1/Th2 and asthmarelated symptoms

摘  要: Asthma is a chronic lung disease that is characterized by wheezing, coughing, bronchial contraction, chest tightness and shortness of breath. The typical asthma symptoms result from allergen-induced airway remodeling and pulmonary inflammatory reactions. Naïve T cells will differentiate into Th1 (Helper T cell type 1) and Th2 cells according to the purpose. Asthma has been confirmed to be caused by Th1 / Th2 cell imbalance. Catalpol is one of the primary components in Radix Rehmanniae Preparata. Catalpol shows prominent anti-inflammatory properties inhibiting inflammatory responses induced by LPS and IFN-γ, high-fat diet and advanced glycation end-products, reducing inflammatory cytokines production. In this report, the therapeutic effects of catalpol on asthma-related symptoms and the Th1/Th2 balance in a mouse model of OVA-induced asthma will be explored. Chen et al. show that catalpol alleviated airway inflammation, attenuated histopathologic changes in the lung, and decreased the levels of IgE, IL-4 and IL-5 in asthmatic mice. Furthermore, the eosinophil chemokine eotaxin and its receptor CCR3 as well as IL-5Rα, were down-regulated by catalpol, suggesting that catalpol inhibited the recruitment and activation of eosinophils under that allergic challenge. Zou et al. show that catalpol could also increase the level of Th1 response, inhibit the secretion of IL-1 or IL-4 and decrease the level of Th2 response by stimulating IFN-γ secretion. In conclusion, catalpol improves the Th1 / Th2 imbalance and reduces eosinophil infiltration in OVA-induced asthmatic mice.
