Influenza virus (IFV) is responsible of a highly contagious disease that has a substantial impact on global health. This virus is a major respiratory pathogen that causes a high degree of morbidity and mortality, especially in immunocompromised hosts. Natural killer (NK) cells play important roles in defense against IAV infection by killing IAV-infected cells and producing cytokines as part of the innate immune response. This can limit the IAV infection and develop an adaptive immune response. Research have reported that beneficial microbes with the capacity to modulate the
mucosal immune system have the ability to improve the outcome of IFV infection. Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms that confer a health benefit on the host. It was found that nano-sized Lactobacillus plantarum (nLp) treatment stimulated nitric oxide (NO) production more in RAW 264.7 macrophages,and induced splenocyte proliferation and stimulated Th1 and Th17 cytokine production to enhancing the immunomodulatory effect. Daily administration of the L. plantarum nF1-fortified yogurt before IAV infection also enhanced splenic NK activity, lung inflammatory cytokine responses, and survival rate. Combining the above results, L. plantarum may stimulated Th1 and Th17 cytokine production and induce immunological responses enhancing the NK cell activity and exhibit both protective and prophylactic effects against IAV infection.
