Bioactive compounds are substances that have an effect on living organisms, tissues or cells, commonly found in plant and animal products, or produced by chemical synthesis. Some are beneficial to the human body, and others are harmful. However, most bioactive compounds have extremely high application potential. Due to low aqueous solubility and poor stability, organic solvents are required to improve the dissolution and concentration of active ingredients. It's necessary to find a carrier system that can effectively and safely increase the availability of these bioactive compounds. In the pharmaceutical industry, nanoemulsion (NE) has been widely used as drug delivery system to protect the active ingredients from oxidation, hydrolysis and volatilization under extreme conditions. NE has been proved to be an effective carrier to improve the bioavailability of drugs through different administration routes by increasing the aqueous solubility and stability of drugs and enhancing intestinal permeability etc. According to the results of these papers, NE can effectively improve the solubility and stability of berberine (BBR). Bioavailability and intestinal permeability of BBR loaded NE are about 2 and 4.5 times higher than control group by oral administration, respectively. Moreover, BBR-loaded NE could exert better hypoglycemic effect and attenuate liver inflammation. On the other hand, high-concentration of organic solvents are required to dissolve nimodipine drugs. Organic solvents-induced pain and inflammation at the injection site would greatly reduce patient's compliance. By using NE as a carrier, the amount of organic solvents could be reduced. Subsequently, alleviation of pain and blood vessel irritation improve patient's compliance. Taken together, NE is a potential as a delivery system for bioactive compounds.
