Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen. It usually coexists in the human oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract and genitourinary tract in a harmless state. When the host's immunity is deficient, it may cause superficial mucosal infections, such as oral and vulvovaginal infections, or even systemic infections. Candida spp. is one of the major pathogens leading to systemic infection in US hospitals, with approximately 50,000 cases per year and a fatality rate of 50%. The current treatment of C. albicans infection is mostly oral or topical application
of antifungal azole drugs to inhibit the growth of C. albicans. However, in addition to the side effects of azole drugs, fluconazole-resistant strains have been found in human. Therefore, it's necessary to develop novel strategies to treat C. albicans infection. According to the results of these papers, Lactobacillus crispatus and L. delbrueckii can be used as a potential biological treatment for vulvovaginal Candida infection, especially for patients who have the concerns of drug resistance, adverse reactions or contraindications when using antifungal drugs. At the same time, both of Lactobacillusstrains have good therapeutic effects in antifungal, anti-inflammatory and mucosal repair. On the other hand, in in vitro experiments, cinnamaldehyde (CA) can mediate mitochondrial dysfunction and promote cell apoptosis. In the Oropharyngeal Candidiasis (OPC) and Vulvovaginal Candidiasis (VVC) infection modes, CA can effectively reduce the colonization and excessive proliferation of C. albicans, and also reduce the tissue and mucosal damage caused by bacterial invasion. Taken together,
both the strategies are effective to alleviate C. albicans infection and to promote tissue repair.
